The Faerings of North America
These pages are dedicated to documenting the type and location of Norwegian Faerings that were imported onto the North American continent from Norway or those built here by the tradition methods. This is simply a place for those fascinated with these age old designs to see the differences and help us track down each and every Faering we can.
These will be organized loosely on the geography of the faering types in Norway. We choose this method to reflect the continuum of the faering type and style along Norway's vast coastline. They will be presented in a south to north progression. They are also presented as distinct categories based on these regions. This is an error since there were no true designs, but instead a huge variety of designs based on the future owner's wishes and wants and needs. We present it this way just for simplicity sakes. We are indebted to the late Jean-Pierre Guillou who wrote and illustrated two beautiful articles for the magazine Maritime Life and Traditions (issue No. 19 and 21--- must reading for all interested) Back issues and art can be found via Woodenboat Magazine). It is his basic categorization that we use herein although he surly would also argue that Faerings cannot be pigeon-holed to types. We are 100% convinced that as this list matures the geographic categories will become more and more refined.
Towards the end of this list some pages are set aside for further readings, builders contacts, and links. These readings are presented as a classic reference of book/articles/journals or actual text copy from builders of others that have agreed to share their knowledge with all of us.
