As found by Bruce Elfstrom in Chesterfield CT USA

from listing:       "Condition: This is one of two boats at the same house. I am not sure, but they seem to be Sound Interclubs--read article in Restoration Logs page. They are Interclubs of some type, but not Adams Interclubs.
"Miraje" has been under cover since being out of the water and is still covered. She had a first coat of fiberglass put on her and then the work stopped. The boat was never uncovered nor in the water after this first, incomplete, layer of glass was put on. I hope this mean that the glass will not be too difficult to remove. The wood (Honduran mahogany )on itself seems to be in good shape. Frames are ok as far as can be seen (sure to need some work, but on a WBRF restoration scale of 1-10 with 10 meaning no need to replace or sister. I would put the frames at a 6-7. The planking seems good from the inside of the boat. The dead wood and shape seem fine, but a good look at the keel, etc would be very important. Deck and cock pit is in fairly good shape, at least easy enough to recreate portions is needed as templates, etc. Cabin needs work on the lowers and corners. She has all her rigging and sails and mast (needs refinishing and work --boxed--). She never had an engine. She needs about 40% of frames sistered or...---new frames throughout if your already there?

The two boats will go together to friends or the same person, etc and it would be nice if stay in the Long Island Sound area so the class can once again race.

RESTORATION LOG:  Don Salisbury new owner.

Hi Bruce

I've started working on Maraje on the second week of November and have put in 55 hours. That got me to the point where I now know how far I'll have to go to bring her back. The fiberglass came off very easily as you predicted but she needs more than I originally anticipated (always does doesn't it?).

I striped off the deck and cabin top to get her ready to reframe and replace the floors. When I pulled out the floors I found the keelson was in worse shape than I had anticipated as the drifts were iron and not bronze. This lead me to pulling out the keel to better assess it's condition. Well it turned out to be garbage and that stopped me in my tracks. At this point I have about $200.00 into it for screws and ledger boards plus the haul and I wasn't sure if I should cut my losses and scrap the project or continue. I thought about and decided to try my hand at making a new keel for her.
I called the sawmill that I usually deal with but he doesn't have the logs to supply me with what I need so I started hunting. I think I found a source but am not sure yet.
Here are some pictures for the progress log. Only time will tell if this will go forward, but if I can get the White Oak reasonably, I'll start hacking away at it. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Bruce,
I was looking for white oak, 2 pieces 10 1/2" X 4 1/2" one 16' 6" and one 13' 6". Six 1" X 12" x 7' 0". That is for the keelson. I also need 30 ft of 2 1/2" X 6" , about 30 bd ft of clear bending stock, and about 50 bd ft of #2 for floors, butts etc. My problem is finding the big pieces in clear stock without heart wood.
Like I said I may have found some but don't know for sure yet. It takes a log about 20" in diameter to get clear stock  without heart wood and nobody seems to have it. I don't know about locust, it's great wood but can you get it in that size? Let me know if you've got something you want to sell.

Hi Bruce,
I'm still in limbo. I think I've found what I need but haven't gotten a price for the wood or shipping yet.I thought about using boxed heart wood but am leery of water migration through checks that might develop as the wood dries. I may do that as a last resort or this project may end in a bonfire. I still only have about 50 hours into it so it could go either way. I'm hoping to save her still.  I did find a good Makita 16 5/16" beam saw on EBay at a good price and bought it to be able to cut the keel.  Is that commitment? Beats me.   Provided things go forward I'll start a progress log but until I'm sure of what I'm doing I think it would be best to hold off. I'll keep you posted.

How's Katrina coming along? Did anyone take the other Sound Interclub "Bandit" ( http://www.woodenboatrescue.org/carview.php?view=94) or is she a memory?

Don
