After receiving the photos from Sven Lunden I am considering restoring the cabin to the original design. As you can see from the current attached photos I have taken the cabin top off to better access the interior. There was a lot of dry rot along the joint where the top and the sides meet so it had to be done anyway. I have contacted Wade Smith from Mystic Seaport and I hope to get him here soon to go over the boat with me and give me advice.
"LINOIL MIX" - an important note here. As I previously noted there is a lot of debate about this issue especially the use of poison (Cuprinol - Termin 8) to kill mold spores. Since posting the information I have received additional input and I have NOT USED ANY POISON MIX INSIDE THE BOAT. Please use extreme caution handling any kind of poison. I will post my final decision on how I will treat, preserve and finish the boat after additional input.

LINOIL MIX - I have continued to do research on this and I find that there is a very good reason that nobody can pin down an exact "mixture ratio" - it all depends on the type of boat, the species of wood, the time of year, the age of the wood, the nationality of the owner (Finns and Swedes can't agree on anything) etc, etc. As far as "poison " goes they do add some to fight off mildew and fungi - mostly local brands not available here. With environmental and health concerns availability of oil base wood preservative is changing every day. I have located "Olympic Clear Wood Preservative" and I will be using it in the mixture - more on the outside and less on the inside - probably 2 parts raw linseed oil / 2 part turps / 1 part Olympic clear inside and 2 part Olympic clear outside. This will go for the first few coats - after that it will be 50/50 linseed oil and turps. I plan to use Kirby paint and I talked to them about the linseed oil mix. They said it was OK to use before painting but "not too much".
Wade Smith made the ride out from Mystic and we took a look at the project. It was obvious when we took a close look that repair was possible but replacement would probably not take that much longer. So I will be replacing the wood keel, stem and sternpost. I already knew that I had to replace the floor timbers, keel bolts and about 30% of the ribs and planks. There is a lot of work to do but I feel better about approaching it the right way. It will be nice to feel secure that the massive cast iron ballast keel will remain firmly bolted to the bottom of the boat.
